TGS, PGS, and Schlumberger to conduct 3D seismic survey offshore Malaysia

The 6,885km² multi-client 3D seismic survey is planned to be carried out in North Luconia Province of the Sarawak Basin.

TGS and its partners PGS and oilfield services company Schlumberger have secured pre-funding for a multi-client 3D seismic survey offshore Malaysia.

Planned to be carried out in North Luconia Province of the Sarawak Basin, the 6,885km²survey acquisition is due to start in June 2023. It is scheduled to conclude in August 2023 while the final deliverables are anticipated in Q2 2024.

TGS noted that the interim results would be made available to assist with evaluation of the early acreage.

The survey is the second phase of a multi-year contract, which was awarded initially by Malaysian firm Petronas in 2020. The contract was awarded to acquire and process up to 105,000km² of multi-client 3D data in the Sarawak Basin over a period of five years.

The latest survey builds on this project’s initial phase in the Sarawak North Luconia Province.

TGS CEO Kristian Johansen said: “TGS has built an expansive multi-client data library across the Asia-Pacific region, and we are pleased to return to the Sarawak Basin with our partners.  Sarawak is an area that has recently experienced multiple oil and gas discoveries, and we expect this to be a very important basin for future exploration.

“As the custodian of Malaysia’s petroleum resources, Malaysia Petroleum Management (MPM), Petronas is actively enhancing seismic data sets in the country that will introduce new plays to be explored to our clients, especially in imaging the pre-MMU play in the deep-water area of Sarawak Basin.”
