Global Expansion, Pertamina NRE and Guma Ready to Build Gas to Power in South Africa
Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE) and Guma signed a Joint Study Agreement (JSA) or joint study related to the potential development of gas to power in the South Africa region.
The signing took place in the midst of an international event, the Indonesia Africa Forum (IAF) in Nusa Dua Bali on 2nd, September conducted by Pertamina NRE Chief Executive Officer, John Anis and Guma Executive Chairman, Robert Gumede and witnessed by Deputy for Coordination of Maritime and Energy Sovereignty of the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Jodi Mahardi and President Director of PT Pertamina (Persero), Nicke Widyawati.
This cooperation aims to collaboratively deepen and conduct joint studies in an effort to develop gas to power in the South Africa Region. This step is also part of Pertamina NRE’s commitment to expand globally, especially in the field of gas to power as an initial medium for energy transition and efforts to continue to reduce the rate of carbon emissions.
“I am pleased to be here and witness the collaboration between Pertamina NRE and Guma. I hope this collaboration will continue into concrete actions that will have a positive impact on both parties,” Jodi said in his speech.
This cooperation is a form of “south-south” cooperation, which is the spirit of the Indonesia – Africa Forum initiated by the Indonesian government, starting with the state visit of the President of the Republic of Indonesia to Africa in August 2023 to explore the potential for collaboration between Indonesia and Africa. Afterwards, on November 17, 2023, Pertamina signed its first MoU with Guma.
Pertamina NRE’s success in completing and operating the Jawa-1 Gas Steam Power Plant (PLTGU) megaproject is a major capital of Pertamina NRE so that it is trusted by global partners to carry out similar technology development. PLTGU Jawa-1 is even the largest PLTGU in Southeast Asia today with the latest combine cycle technology.
“Of course, with this wealth of experience, especially the success at Jawa-1, Pertamina NRE is the right partner for Guma to develop a clean energy ecosystem in South Africa. At the same time, this is Pertamina NRE’s journey to support the mission of world countries to achieve net zero emissions,” said John Anis.
As part of Pertamina Group, Pertamina NRE is always committed to carrying out clean energy initiatives as part of the implementation of environmental, social and governance (ESG) aspects and support for sustainable development goals.
