Nano Bubble: A Breakthrough for Iran’s Oil and Gas Industry

Iran’s oil, gas, and petrochemical sectors—key pillars of the national economy—face ongoing challenges such as declining extraction efficiency, pipeline and equipment clogging, high chemical consumption, and environmental pollution. In recent years, modern technologies, especially nanotechnology, have helped address some of these issues.

Among emerging innovations, nano bubbles stand out with their unique properties, offering transformative potential across various industry processes.

Sepehr Azarshab, Energy and Petrochemical Business Development Manager at the Nano and Micro Technology Development Headquarters, noted: “Thanks to the efforts of domestic technologists and the Nano Headquarters, new products have been developed to fill existing gaps. Nano bubbles have also advanced in this field and can play a special role by providing unique solutions in different sectors.”

The Role of Nano Bubbles in the Oil and Gas Industry

Improving Efficiency:

Large amounts of oil remain trapped within porous rock formations in many reservoirs, making extraction difficult. Nano bubbles can penetrate these layers, freeing trapped oil and boosting recovery rates. This method presents an environmentally friendly and cost-effective alternative to injecting expensive and pollutant chemicals.

Reducing Chemical Use:

Due to their high oxidation capacity, large surface area, and stability, nano bubbles replace some chemical agents used in water treatment, equipment sterilization, and material separation processes, leading to significant cost savings.

Resolving Equipment Blockages:

Deposits and clogging of pipelines and heat exchangers are common issues in refineries and petrochemical plants. Nano bubbles effectively clean suspended particles and sediments inside such equipment, improving operational reliability.

Lowering Environmental Pollution:

Nano bubbles play a vital role in wastewater treatment by removing harmful compounds such as hydrogen sulfide and heavy metals, contributing to environmental protection.

Given the complex technical needs of the oil and gas industry, employing technologies like nano bubbles not only enhances productivity but also offers an economical and sustainable solution to reduce costs and protect the environment. With strong support from domestic innovators and the Nano Technology Development Headquarters, the future looks promising for wider application of this cutting-edge technology.
